A History of every current Harley Davidson Model. Part 1 – The Softail Standard

The Harley-Davidson Softail Standard is a classic American motorcycle that has a rich history and a loyal following. The Softail line was first introduced in 1984 and the Softail Standard was one of the original models. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the history of the Softail Standard and how it has evolved over the years.

The Softail Standard was designed to look like a traditional hard tail motorcycle, but with the added comfort and rideability of a modern suspension system. The bike features a long, low profile with a low seat height, making it ideal for cruising and touring. It was powered by a V-twin engine that provided plenty of power and torque, making it a favourite among riders who loved the classic American motorcycle style.

Over the years, the Softail Standard has undergone several changes and updates. In 1991, Harley-Davidson introduced the Fat Boy, a Softail model that was similar in style to the Softail Standard, but with a larger, more powerful engine. The Fat Boy quickly became a bestseller, but the Softail Standard remained a popular choice for riders who preferred a more classic look.

In 1999, the Softail Standard received a major overhaul with the introduction of the Twin Cam 88 engine. This new engine provided even more power and torque, making the Softail Standard an even more capable touring motorcycle. The bike also received several cosmetic updates, including a new fuel tank and a redesigned frame.

In 2006, Harley-Davidson introduced the Softail Standard’s successor, the Softail Custom. The Custom featured a more streamlined design with a narrower rear fender and a lower profile. The Custom was also powered by the Twin Cam 88 engine, making it just as capable as the Softail Standard.

Despite the introduction of the Softail Custom, the Softail Standard remained in production and continued to be a popular choice for riders who preferred a more classic look. In 2017, Harley-Davidson introduced the latest version of the Softail Standard, which featured a new Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine and a more minimalist design.
