A Guide to Obtaining a Motorcycle Licence (South Australia Edition)

Introduction: Obtaining a motorcycle licence is an exciting endeavour for those passionate about riding on the open road. However, it requires proper training, adherence to regulations, and a step-by-step process. In this blog post, we will outline the essential information you need to know to apply for a motorcycle licence, including the required courses, age restrictions, and the necessary steps to follow. Let’s dive in!

  1. Basic Rider Safe Course: The first step towards acquiring a motorcycle licence is to attend the Basic Rider Safe training course. This course equips you with the fundamental skills necessary for safe motorcycle riding on public roads. To participate, you must have a current driver’s licence or learner’s permit. If you don’t have one, you’ll need to pass a theory test. The course is available at various locations across the region, such as St Agnes, Murray Bridge, Millicent, Barmera, Port Pirie, and Whyalla.
  2. Learner’s Permit Application: Upon successfully completing the Basic Rider Safe course, you can apply for a learner’s permit. To be eligible, you must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be 17 years of age and hold a provisional licence for another class of vehicle.
  • Be 16 years of age and live in a prescribed locality. The learner’s permit allows you to ride for specific purposes, including attending tertiary education or vocational training, commuting to work, or participating in sporting activities. Remember to carry your learner’s permit at all times while riding.
  1. Advanced Rider Safe Course: After obtaining the learner’s permit, the next step is to enrol in the Advanced Rider Safe course. This course builds upon the skills learned in the Basic Rider Safe course and further enhances your riding abilities. To enrol, contact Service SA to pay for the course and make a booking.
  2. Applying for an R-Date Licence: Once you have completed the Advanced Rider Safe course and are at least 19 years old, you can apply for an R-Date licence. Present your certificate of competency at any Service SA customer service centre to initiate the application process. If you already hold a driver’s licence, the R-date motorcycle class will be added to it. For those without a licence, but with at least 12 months of learner’s permit experience, you can apply for a provisional licence. Please note that you will need to hold an R-Date licence classification for two years before riding motorcycles outside the learner approved motorcycle scheme.
  3. Upgrading to an R-Class Licence: After two years of riding with the restricted R-Date licence, you become eligible to ride motorcycles or motor trikes of any power to weight ratio. You don’t need to apply for an upgrade; your licence class will automatically update to R-class upon your next licence renewal. Alternatively, you can choose to upgrade the class before the eligibility date lapses by contacting Service SA and paying a fee for a replacement licence.

Acquiring a motorcycle licence involves a structured process that ensures you have the necessary skills and experience to ride safely. From the Basic Rider Safe course to obtaining a learner’s permit and completing the Advanced Rider Safe training, each step is designed to equip you with the knowledge and abilities required to navigate the road confidently.

Remember to follow the outlined steps, adhere to the age requirements, and always prioritise safety. Ride responsibly and enjoy the thrilling experience of being on two wheels!
